About Me

My photo
I retired from the Auto Industry in the Detroit area and now make my home in sunny Arizona. I enjoy travel and photography. Although I often think of my photography as serendipitous; I really direct myself to places where those pleasant surprises are likely to occur. When I travel I call myself the "Happy Wanderer".

End of the Utah Trip -- Day 11, May 23

DAY 11, MAY 23
1. Had to decide my trip plans. My original thought was to drive up to Telluride, look around there, and then spend the night in the van. The weather forecast there was for high winds today and record low temps for tomorrow with chance of thunderstorms and/or snow. With that outlook I decided that I had seen my major goals and that it was time to head back home.
2. I thought it would be interesting to highlight some of the sights along the way. I started to do this but the winds picked up to 50mph and the blowing sand made it unpleasant to be out of the car and the pictures were obscured by the sandstorm.
3. While still in Colorado, I made a stop at the Ute Mountain Casino and tried my luck. I came out 1 1/2 hours later $110 richer; one of my few victories at a casino.
4. The wind continued to blow and all the loose desert sand across NE Arizona was on its way to Utah in a great hurry. This was about a 50mph continuous headwind/crosswind and combined with my 60mph car speed made for quite a gritty day (and sandblasted my windshield).
5. I persevered onward and reached home shortly after 7 pm. This included a brief stop at Cliff Castle Casino ($4 ahead) and a traffic jam by an accident on I-17 coming down into the Phoenix area that had us parked for a half hour on the freeway.
6. Except for this lousy last travel day the trip was a great one. I enjoyed all the scenery, soaked up the great outdoors, and took lots of photographs. All this and not even a cut, scrape, sunburn, or bug bite.
